Help NLC Alumni Volunteer with Miracle Messages in Boston this summer!
Please consider helping us cover the costs for 15 DiscoveryBound National Leadership Council (NLC) graduates to volunteer helping homeless people alongside Miracle Messages in Boston, MA.
Your donation means much more than supporting NLC alumni who want to give to a good cause. You will also be nurturing the idea that young adult Christian Scientists belong in the service community, encouraging them to learn about the diverse needs of their country and what they have to offer, and providing an opportunity for them to reconnect with their NLC peers.
As many of you may know, the National Leadership Council is a four-year servant leadership program for Christian Science high school student. NLC is a laboratory where students on the edge of adulthood learn to engage with the world through the lens of a Christian Scientist by giving back to our larger community. Participants learn leadership principles that underscore the importance of service to mankind, leading by example, and inspiring others to do good.
The NLC Alumni Initiative provides the opportunity for graduates of the NLC program to continue this wonderful work! As NLC alumni, we appreciate this network to stay in touch with old friends, meet new graduates of the program, find opportunities to serve our community, and build supportive relationships with other young Christian Scientists. These connections continue to buoy us in our careers, relationships, and church involvement.
We have found that community service is an important component of our NLC experience that we want to continue to practice. Therefore, one of our most treasured activities as alumni is an annual service trip. Last year, we chose to focus on conservation. For five days over Memorial Day weekend, we volunteered with the Catalina Island Conservancy on Catalina Island, just off the coast of Los Angeles. We assisted Catalina Island Conservancy in its efforts to protect 88 percent of the Island, including more than 62 miles of unspoiled beaches and secluded coves. Our contributions help protect local ecology and preserve opportunities for outdoor education and appreciation.
This year we decided to take what we’ve learned as servant leaders to Boston, MA, where we will be working with Miracle Messages to continue developing our interpersonal skills and nurture the homeless community. Miracle Messages is a non-profit organization founded by Kevin Adler who says he “never learned the word stranger.” His organization is based out of San Francisco and works to reconnect the homeless people with their families, which often results in the homeless people coming off the streets and into a home. This summer we will helping launch a Miracle Messages presence in Boston, where there are over 7,000 homeless people.
Reaching our goal in this campaign would offset registration costs and enable 15 graduates to join us on this weekend. You can either purchase one of our shirts (designed by a 2016W NLC grad) or provide a donation without a T-shirt purchase. Thank you for nurturing connections between young adult Christian Scientists! We also encourage you to comment, with a donation or not, about your love for service, for NLC, or for Christian Science. Tell us why you donated, or if you have a funny or fun memory from NLC. We are incredibly grateful for your support!

I wish I could make it this year. These trips are so important for the DB/CS/NLC community as well as the communities they serve!

I can't think of anything more impactful than to support these NLC alumni. Being servant leaders is who they are and what they love to do.
